How Academic Libraries are Organized

Libraries use call number systems to organize materials.  You may be familiar with the Dewey Decimal system, which is used in most public and school libraries.  Like most academic libraries, the Vassar College Libraries uses the Library of Congress Classification System as the basis of its call number system.  LC is more useful for larger library collections because it offers more options for subject categories than the Dewey system.

However, certain materials in our library use other classification systems.  Government documents have their own system and our Music library has a specialized, home-grown system for some materials.  Our dvd and vhs collections are just assigned numbers.

1.  Once you've found the call number of the item you need, be sure to note where it is (LOCATION) and whether or not it's AVAILABLE.

2.  Consult the Libraries Guide to Locations to coordinate the call number to a room number using the Library Map.
