Books and Films

There are several ways faculty can submit lists to the department:

  • Fill out the Reserves Form for books and DVDs.
  • Fill out the Video Purchase Request Form for streaming video(s) required for a class.
  • Paper forms are available in the reserves office.  Return completed paper forms to a Reserve department staff member.
  • You may also send your list to reserve@vassar.edu.  Please specify the course for which the materials are needed.
  • Reserves will collect the materials on your lists for processing, but to expedite processing, you may bring materials (accompanied by your lists) to the reserve office.  The office is open Monday-Friday 8:30-5:00.  Evenings and weekends, you may leave materials and lists with a circulation staff member.

Lists are processed on a first-come first-served basis.

  1. Lists with materials in hand
  2. Lists with LC call numbers
  3. Lists without call numbers or with incomplete citations.

Please allow 2 weeks for processing lists at the beginning of the semester.  At other times allow 1 or 2 days.

Faculty members are invited to visit the Reserves Office, located in Room 146, for any assistance they may need with their Course Reserves.

Textbook Program Purchase Request

In Fall 2021, the Libraries resumed the textbook purchase program, which was started as a pilot project in 2019 and was suspended during Spring 2020. At the request of the professor, the Libraries will purchase copies of textbooks that are required reading for a course. We will purchase copies, to be placed on Course Reserve, at a ratio of 1 book for every 10 enrolled students.

Book Classroom Viewing

Faculty can use the Video Screening Form to reserve DVDs and VHS for classroom screenings. Please allow 3 business days to process requests.

Note:  Putting a DVD or VHS in the Course Reserves for your class does not guarantee it will be available on the date you wish to screen it.  Please use the form to ensure the film is available on the date needed.

Putting Documents in Moodle

Faculty may submit documents to be placed on Moodle by:

  • Submitting a Reserves Form with full citation information (or url) for each individual reserve item.  Print forms are also available in the Reserves Office.
  • You may also drop off photocopies of articles or chapters at the reserve office.  To ensure quality scanning, please consider the legibility of your submissions.
  • Sending pdfs as attachments to reserve@vassar.edu.  Please specify the course for which the files are needed.
  • Reserves staff can either upload files to your Moodle accounts so that you can manipulate them, or they can supply you with a link that you can add to your Moodle account -  readings will be in list format. Advanced notice is necessary if you need a large number of documents uploaded to Moodle. Contact the Reserves office for any assistance you may need. 845-437-5796 or reserve@vassar.edu

Copyright Guidelines for E-Reserves

The following guidelines are used to determine how much of a particular work and what type of works can be put on E-Reserves.

  • Entire works if in the public domain (works published before 1923 and most government publications)
  • Requests to place a small portion of a text on e-reserves must be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Print journals. One article per journal issue. In some instances, we may be able to place additional articles from the same issue on reserve, though requests to do so must be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Electronic journals (Vassar subscription) The number of articles that can be linked depends on the terms of our licensing agreement. Some materials cannot be placed on E-Reserves.

See the Vassar College Guide to Copyright for more information.
